It was out with the old and in with the new at the Emmys on Sunday, with a slew of first-timers and new shows shaking up the U.S. television industry's highest honors. Viola Davis from "How to Get Away With Murder" became the first black woman ever to win Best Actress in a Drama.

"Transparent" emerged as an early winner at Sunday's Emmy Awards, capturing a Best Comedy-Actor trophy for Jeffrey Tambor and a Directing award for its creator. Both winners took the opportunity to pay tribute to the show's transgender themes.

Jon Hamm, who played Don Draper on "Mad Men", won his first Emmy Award. This is also the biggest one so far for "Mad Men," which left television after seven seasons this year.

Viola Davis is the Emmy winner for Best Actress in a Drama, the first black woman ever to win in that category.

She plays a professor and defense attorney in ABC's "How to Get Away With Murder", which is just beginning its second season.

Best Comedy Series went to political satire "Veep". The win was its fourth Sunday night, following Best Actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays its bungling but well-intentioned President of the United States.

"Game of Thrones" also capped off a big night at the Emmys for HBO.

The fantasy drama captured awards for Best Drama, Best Directing, and Best Writing. And Peter Dinklage won Best Supporting Actor in a Drama.

Other big winners include "Olive Kitteridge," based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Elizabeth Strout.

It nearly swept the limited-series categories with six trophies including the top award and lead acting honors for Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins, and a supporting award for Bill Murray.
