Uruguay's ruling Broad Front party candidate Tabare Vazquez has won the presidential election.
Three exit polls released Sunday showed Vazquez winning, with roughly 54 percent of the vote, against the center-right candidate Luis Lacalle Pou, who conceded defeat.
Vazquez, a 74-year-old oncologist, was president from 2005 until 2010, when he was replaced by Jose Mujica. His administration worked to reduce poverty, improve education and working conditions, and expand welfare coverage.
The runoff result means a return to power for his left-leaning coalition, which has legalized gay marriage and created the world’s first state-run marijuana marketplace.
