More than 1 million school students in New York City are getting a new school holiday, the city's mayor announced at a public school.
"Today, we say yes to Lunar New Year as a school holiday in New York City," said New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio.
"We believe in celebrating this multicultural city, and in this case, starting on February 8, 2016"
More than 75,000 Asian American students make up the New York City public school system. And Lunar New Year is the most important holiday of the year for many of them. Before the new rule, the students were forced to choose between celebrating with family or missing school. New York is the second major US city to add Lunar New Year to the school calendar, following San Francisco.
