LOS ANGELES, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Fox's fantasy film "Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" opened as the most-popular film in North America this weekend.

"Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children" opened with an estimated 28.5 million U.S. dollars in its opening weekend from 3,522 theaters in the United States and Canada, according to studio estimates gathered by comScore.

Directed by Tim Burton, the film received a "B+" from first-night moviegoers on CinemaScore and currently holds a so-so 64 percent from critics on RottenTomatoes. The overall audience for the film breakdown coming in at 41 percent male vs 59 percent female and 51 percent of all audience members were under the age of 25.

Lionsgate's action drama "Deepwater Horizon" opened in second place, with an estimated 20.6 million U.S. dollars in ticket sales. It earned an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences and holds an 82 percent positive rating on RottenTomatoes.

Sony's "The Magnificent Seven" was down to third place this weekend. It has grossed above 61.6 million dollars in America and Canada in two weeks, and estimated to have 15.7 million dollars this weekend, decreasing 54.8 percent compared with the ticket sales last weekend.

The remaining 10 most-popular movies this week were "Storks" (13.8 million dollars), "Sully" (8.4 million dollars), "Masterminds" (6.6 million dollars), "Queen Of Katwe" (2.6 million dollars), "Don't Breathe" (2.4 million dollars), "Bridget Jones's Baby" (2.3 million dollars) and "Snowden" (2 million dollars).
