LOS ANGELES, April 13 (Xinhua) -- Disney's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" claimed the first place at North American box offices for a second weekend, beating the animated "Rio 2" by a slim margin.
The gross of "Captain America 2" totaled 41.4 million U.S. dollars, representing a marked 56 percent decline from last weekend's record-breaking April start, according to Rentrak.
The sequel has garnered 160 million dollars over 10 days. Ticket sales from IMAX locations were responsible for 3.6 million dollars of the film's overall grosses this weekend. "Captain America 2" has grossed 14.7 million dollars to date in IMAX.
"Rio 2" debuted in second with an estimated 39 million dollars from 3,948 theaters in its North American launch. Without adjustment for ticket price inflation, "Rio 2" generated the eighth largest opening weekend ever for the month of April.
The 3D computer animated sequel opened nearly on par with the 39.2 million dollars debut of 2011's "Rio". Among recent animated movies, it's noticeably higher than "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" (32.2 million dollars) and " Muppets Most Wanted" (17 million dollars).
Moviegoers gave "Rio 2" a strong "A" CinemaScore. With this strong word-of-mouth reputation the animated sequel may perform well in the following weeks.
Relativity's horror film "Oculus," which was directed by Mike Flanagan and made at a cost of less than five million dollars, debuted in the third place with an estimated 12.0 million dollars from 2,648 theaters and earned a lackluster "C" CinemaScore.
According to Relativity Media, the audience was 51 percent female and 52 percent under the age of 25.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Draft Day" (9.8 million dollars), "Divergent" (7.5 million), "Noah" (7.5 million), "God's Not Dead" (5.5 million), "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (4 million), "Muppets Most Wanted" (2.2 million) and "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" (1.8 million).
