英语文摘:Budapest International Film Festival opens

BUDAPEST, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The 17th Titanic International Film Festival opened in Budapest on Wednesday.

The Titanic is Hungary's largest international film festival in terms of visitors and feature films. Sixty one films from 25 nations will be screened during the festival which runs until April 18.

Nine films are in competition for the prestigious Breaking Waves award and 10,000 euros prize, the fifth year in which the prize has been awarded.

Over the past 17 years, the Titanic Festival has become integrated in the regional and international film festival circuit and its prizes are considered influential for independent films. Opening the festival, Gyorgyi Vastag Germanne, Chair of Education and Youth Politics Committee of Capital's Council, called the festival "an amazing success story."

Along with war and conflict, China is one of the two main themes at this year's event. Festival director Gyorgy Horvath said "China's rapid economic development has led to similar progress in its film industry, both in quantity and quality."

"City of Life and Death" concerns the Japanese invasion of former Chinese capital Nanjing in December 1937 and its bloody aftermath.

A special section, called "Year of the Tiger" contains a selection of Chinese films, including "Cow," "The Equation of Love and Death," "Memory of Love," "Parking," "Wheat", and "Yang Yang".

Besides the competition section and "Year of the Tiger", the film festival has 7 sections, they are Family Ties, Curious Tales, French Shoals, The Dark Side, Animation 1.0, Music for All, and Documentaries.
