来自俄勒冈的变性男子托马斯·贝蒂通过人工受精方式怀孕。因认为“想要一个亲生的孩子并不是男性或女性的渴望，而是作为人类的渴望”，他决定怀这个孩子。
该报道中，artificial insemination 就是“人工受精”。transgender指 a person appearing orattempting to be a member of the opposite sex, as a transsexual or habitualcross-dresser (变性人)，有时候也会用作形容词，跟transgendered同义，指“变性的”。而我们常见的表达sex change 则是thealteration, by surgery and hormone treatments, of a person's morphological sexcharacteristics to approximate those of the opposite sex，指“变性(手术或过程)”。
