班上的Franky一向成绩优导，但最近上课心神恍惚，测验成绩亦一落千丈。为了了解他的情况，我请来他的好友George，打听他的情况。George的英文颇佳，常主动用英语与我交谈。论及Franky, 他说：
The reason why he is so depressed is because his parents are going to divorce.
他如此沮丧的原因是他父母将要离婚。
要注意的是why之后所引出的从句是陈述情况或结果，而that之后的从句所述及的是原因。两者绝不可互调，要不然句子就不合逻辑。
(×)：The reason why he is sick is that he is absent.
应写成：
The reason why he is absent is that he is sick.
他缺席是因为他病了。
另外why在这句子结构中可省略，故上句可写成：
The reason he is absent is that he is sick.
