confine, imprison, jail
这些动词均含“监禁”之意。
confine : 指监禁或幽禁；也指任何使行动受到限制的行为。
They confined the prisoner in a cell.（他们把犯人监禁在监狱里。）
imprison : 较正式用词，多指较长时间的监禁。
They imprisoned many of those they caught.（他们把抓来的许多人关入了监狱。）
jail : (英国用gaol)多指审判之间的拘禁或对罪行较轻的罪犯的监禁。
Due to a police mix up, the robber go free and the victim is jailed.(由於警察搞混了,小偷逃逸而受害者却入狱了。_
confirm, verify
这两个动词都有“证实”之意。
confirm : 侧重以事实或以不容置疑的陈述来证实某事的正确与真实。
We have confirmed the report.(我们证实了那则报道。)
verify : 强调以具体的事实和细节为证据。
Subsequent events verified that his judgement was at fault.(接着发生的事件证实了他的判断有误。)
