据俄罗斯媒体报道，在俄罗斯总统梅德韦杰夫签署法令承认阿布哈兹和南奥塞梯独立后，格鲁吉亚外交部已经于9月2日正式通知俄罗斯驻格使馆两国断交，但格俄仍将保持领事关系。
外电中有如下报道：
Georgia on Tuesday formally severed diplomatic relations with Russia in protest against Moscow’s recognition of the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions.
格鲁吉亚于9月2日正式宣布与俄罗斯断交，抗议俄罗斯承认阿布哈兹和南奥塞梯独立。
“与…断绝外交关系”就是 sever diplomatic relations with…，sever，to break up a relationship，即分离，断绝。
另外一种比较正式的说法，即 terminate diplomatic relations with…（与...终止外交关系）
“绝交”的常见表达还有 break ties with，cut ties with…
例如：It was time for them to leave their house, cut ties with the father and move on with their lives.（他们该离开家、跟父亲断绝关系、过自己的生活了。）
有“绝交”就有“建交”。“建交”通常用establish, set up 来表达。例如，We have established trade ties with these regions. （我们和这些地区建立了贸易关系。）
