This win comes only moments after the old record of 48.17 had just broken by 32-year-old Jason Lezak (48.15) in the previous heat. Also surpassing Lezak’s time, Michael Phelps placed second in the prelims with a time of 47.92. The current world record of 47.50 was set by Alain Bernard of France in March 2008.
