police表示“警察”的总称，含有“警方”“警察当局”之意，其前通常用the（有时也可省略），形式上是单数，但含义上为复数；用作主语时，谓语要用复数。如：

The police in Britain don’t usually carry guns. 英国警察通常是不带枪的。

The police have a clear case against the prisoner. 警方掌握了不利于该罪犯的确凿事实。

Police are searching the area for clues to the murder. 警方正在搜查该地区以寻找谋杀案的线索。

表示“一个警察”时不能用它，即不说a [one] police，而应根据情况用a policeman / a policewoman；但表示多个警察时，可用它。如：

There were over 100 police on duty at the demonstration. 游行期间有100多名警察值勤。
