It's International Children's Day today. The date was first proclaimed in 1925 during The World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, aimed at promoting the welfare of children around the world.
There are currently 2.2 billion children worldwide. According to the United Nations, nearly 30 million children are displaced around the world, as a result of armed conflicts. Girls continue to be held back from education, especially in West and Central Africa. For every 100 boys enrolled in primary school, only 90 girls are admitted.
The exclusion is worse in secondary school, where only 76 girls are enrolled for every 100 boys.
