In England, F.A. Cup winners Arsenal took on the EPL winners Chelsea in the season's traditional curtain raiser, the Charity Shield, at Wembley stadium in London. To add extra significance to this encounter, goalkeeper Petr Cech would be making his debut for the Gunners having called time on his 10 year stint at Stamford Bridge after losing the number one shirt to Thiabault Courtois. But by the end of the day it would be clear why Arsene Wenger was so keen to secure the services of the 33-year old.
In the 23rd minute, Theo Walcott sprays a pass out wide to Alex Oxlaide Chamberlin and the England international is able to pick his spot to put last years winners 1 up.
Chelsea try and strike back quickly. Willian with the cross but Ramires can only guide his header over the cross bar and his boss is not happy.
In the second half Eden Hazzard is put through by Cesc Fabregas but the PFA player of the year completely misses the target.
With just over 20 minutes left Oscar sees his free-kick saved spectacularly by his former team-mate, Cech.

"Personally, honestly it didn't play on my mind at all. But as long as I get it served every time in press conferences it can have an impact on the team. Certainly the way my team behaved in some periods of the game, it was important for them to get that hurdle out of the way," Wenger said.
