Much of New Zealand has been shaken by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake today.
The government's GeoNet monitoring service said the quake struck at 3:36 p.m. local time, and it was centered 40 kilometers northwest of the South Island town of Kaikoura. The agency upgraded the magnitude from an initial reading of 6. 2 and described the intensity of the quake as strong.
Local authorities said there were no immediate reports of damage, although the quake was widely felt.
