The World Health Organisation says there had been a 'real slowdown' in the speed of new Ebola cases, since its 60-day goal for tackling the Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been largely met.

"Now that we’re on track because the disease is slowing down with this 70 percent achievement to stopping Ebola. You’re not on track by getting 70/70/60, you have reached a way, an important milestone along the way," WHO assistant director general Dr. Bruce Aylward said.

WHO launched its Ebola plan two months ago to isolate 70 percent of the sick and safely bury 70 percent of the victims in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone by December the first.

Aylward said Liberia and Guinea have met the target, while Sierra Leone met the targets only in the west of the country. Latest figures reported by the WHO puts death toll at 5987 in the three hardest-hit West African countries.
