China’s Olympic men’s basketball team was looking to head into the London Games on a winning note on Tuesday night as they wrapped up their Olympic preparations by hitting the court in Guangzhou for the final of the Stankovic Continental Cup. China, looking to record a first ever tournament win by downing Australia in the final.
China cruise throught the round robin portion of the event, going a perfect 3-0 and came into the final with a win over Australia earlier on. China, looking very good in that first meeting, handing the Aussie’s a 23-point defeat. So it was a confident Chinese team taking to the court and they would get off to a solid start to the final, opening up an 8 point lead in the first thanks to strong play from CBA standout Zhu Fangyu and NBA forward Yi Jianlian.
And China would continue to play well in the second quarter, led by the NBA vet Yi. He would lead China on the night, dropping 14 points and adding 9 rebounds.
And by the end of the third Q, China had opened up a commanding 23 points lead which they would not relinquish.
China would hold off Australia in the 4th to take a first Stankovic Continental Cup title...70-51 the final, as the Chinese National Men’s Basketball team head into London 2012 on a winning note.
