The UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA says it has received information from Japan, stating that there does not appear to be a high increase of radioactivity outside the containment area.
The Director General of the nuclear agency, Yukio Amano, said because reactors had been shut down, there wouldn't be a chain reaction of nuclear material.
Yukio Amano, IAEA Director General, said, "Affected reactors have been shut down automatically. They have been shut down, so there is no longer chain reaction of nuclear material. There are some hydrogen explosions, this is not a nuclear reaction but a chemical phenomenon. Despite the hydrogen explosions reactor vessels and primary containment vessels - these are designed to prevent the massive release of radioactivity - stay intact."
