OUAGADOUGOU, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Gilbert Diendere, the coup leader of Burkina Faso, was seized and handed over to the transition authorities on Thursday, an official source said.

The coup leader had taken refuge at the residence of the Vatican's representative in Burkina Faso.

He was reportedly seized after loyalist army launched an assault "without bloodshed" on a stronghold of pro-coup presidential security regiment after the return to normal constitutional situation in the West African country.

Brigadier general Gilbert Diendere is handed over in order "to appear before justice to answer for his deeds", the source said.

The coup leader said he was worried about his security and that of his family, as the coup attempt was widely condemned and the violence related to it caused a dozen of fatalities and over 200 injured.

"The arrest of general Gilbert Diendere is only a question of time", the Prime minister of transition Yacouba Isaac Zida declared a bit before on Thursday.

According to militaries sources, over half of the disbanded presidential security regiment (RSP), a 1,300 soldiers elite army unit, who attempted to seize power, surrendered and continue to surrender.
