WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- A "critically ill" doctor diagnosed with the deadly Ebola virus infection in Sierra Leone arrived Saturday in the United States for treatment, the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he will undergo treatment, confirmed.

Martin Salia, a native of Sierra Leone and a U.S. legal permanent resident, landed at Omaha's Eppley Airfield at around 4: 00 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT) and was then transported to the Nebraska Medical Center, one of the four hospitals in the U.S. equipped to handle Ebola.

"We have received word he is critically ill -- possibly sicker than any of the other patients transferred from West Africa and treated for Ebola in the United States," the hospital said in an update on Facebook.

The evacuation came at the request of his wife, an American citizen, who has agreed to reimburse the government for any expense, said local media reports, quoting a statement from the U. S. State Department.

Earlier this year, the Nebraska Medical Center has successfully treated two patients who also contracted the virus in West Africa.

Eight of the previous nine Ebola patients treated in the United States survived. Only one, the Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan, died of the virus.
