TRIPOLI, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The al-Qaida-inspired militant group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is seeking to open branches in Libya, a Libyan local newspaper Bawat Alwasat reported on Tuesday.

The report said leaders of the intelligence services in Tunisia, Egypt, and Algeria gathered last weekend to study some security reports and discuss precautions to curb the extension of the organization.

There were clues that some Libyan extremists and Jihadists were returning to their home country, attempting to set up a ISIS headquarter in North Africa, the report quoted security sources as saying.

The power vacuum left by the 2011 downfall of Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi might make it an ideal condition for ISIL to grow, the report added.
