U.S. President Barack Obama is naming one of his business critics to an advisory panel that is trying to find new ways to put the United States ahead of its global competition.

A White House official says the president will appoint Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini to the recently created jobs and competitiveness council.

Otellini, who has criticized the Obama administration's handling of the economic recovery, will take Mr. Obama on a tour of an Intel semiconductor plant in Oregon on Friday.

The president is expected to make remarks and call for greater investments in education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.  President Obama has called for those investments in order to be ahead of the global competition and "win the future."

On Thursday, the president met in California with 12 of the country's top technology leaders to discuss ways the government and business community can collaborate to strengthen the U.S. economy.

Among those at the event were Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg, Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt and Steve Jobs, the founder of the technology company Apple.

Mr. Obama met privately with the group in the San Francisco area.
