LOS ANGELES, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of Angelenos left for Arizona on Thursday to join the protest there as a controversial immigration law takes effect in the U.S. state.
Organizers said that even though key portions of the Arizona law were blocked by a federal judge, immigrant-rights activists thought it was necessary to travel to Arizona to protest the measure.
U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton in Phoenix issued a preliminary injunction on Wednesday, blocking several sections of the law from taking effect.
Most notably, she blocked the provision that requires law enforcement officials to check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws, if they reasonably suspect the person is in the country illegally.
