英语文摘：EU to unveil results of bank stress tests

BRUSSELS, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) will unveil results of the bank stress tests later on Friday in a bid to assure investors who worry about the healthiness of Europe's banking sector in view of the sovereign debt crisis.

The aggregate results will be published by the London-based Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS) at 16:00 GMT and individual results of the banks concerned will be published by national regulators afterwards.

A total of 91 banks, accounting for 65 percent of Europe's banking sector, have been examined. To pass the tests, the banks will have to maintain core capital which must reach a minimum ratio of 6 percent against their total assets, a criteria defined as Tier 1 capital ratios by the CEBS.

Analysts said that success of the tests depend on transparency of the results and the methodology deployed.

Senior fellow at the brussels-based think tank Bruegel Nicolas Veron said: "For this uNPRecedented effort to be successful, a high level of transparency will be needed in order to force divergent national players into a consistent and credible process."

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in a report this week that the stress tests must be credible to allay fears of investors.

"To maximize confidence building, the IMF recommends full disclosure of the findings and effective follow up," it said.

The EU conducted stress tests of some banks in September last year but did not publish the results and banks examined.
