WASHINGTON, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The United States on Friday called Iran's intention on nuclear program "nefarious" as the country unveiled a new generation of centrifuge for uranium enrichment.

"If Iran wants the international community to believe what it says, that it has peaceful intentions with respect to its nuclear program, then Iran has no need for a third generation, or faster centrifuge," State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said.

"We have to conclude that Iran has nefarious intentions in its nuclear program," Crowley said.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Friday unveiled the first sample of new generation of centrifuges in Tehran, the capital of Iran.

The new generation of centrifuges have a separation power six times that of the first generation, according to head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali-Akbar Salehi, who is also Iran's vice president.

The United States and other Western countries have been pushing for a fourth round of UN sanctions to restrict Iran's nuclear efforts, which they say are aimed at developing nuclear weapons.

Iran has denied the Western accusation and stressed its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and intended to generate electricity for its population.

Since 2006, the UN Security Council has slapped three rounds of sanctions against Iran.
