NEW YORK, March 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks ended modestly higher on Wednesday as technology companies rebounded.

Stocks opened higher in the morning after Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said the Obama administration will use capital injections as an incentive to make banks sell toxic assets to investors.

However, energy stocks dragged down the markets as crude prices plunged due to an unexpected buildup in U.S. inventories. Exxon Mobil, the Dow component, was down 2.4 percent.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard rose 5.8 percent, pushing the Dow Jones average index higher, after a broker's recommendation on the stock.

On Nasdaq, shares of Apple jumped 4.6 percent as the company introduced a new version of its popular iPod Shuffle.

JPMorgan shares rose 4.6 percent as its Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said the bank was profitable in January and February.

The Dow Jones average rose 3.91, or 0.1 percent, to 6,930.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 1.76, or 0.2 percent, to 721.36. The Nasdaq composite index rose 13.36, or 1 percent, to 1,371.64.
