DHAKA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- A senior Bangladesh military officer Monday night said only 7 army officers are now missing after the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) mutiny that left so far 56 army officers and their family members killed.

Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Sina Ibne Jamali told reporters in Dhaka Cantonment that three unidentified bodies have been kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital mortuary and their identities could be ascertained after DNA tests. He said 40 army officers were rescued alive.

Asked about the missing of 72 officers as stated earlier by Military Intelligence Director Brigadier General Mahbub, Sina said after checks and cross-checks they have confirmed that 7 officers are now missing.

He said an army inquiry committee headed by Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury will start functioning from Tuesday to investigate the BDR mutiny.

The inquiry committee will visit the BDR headquarters Tuesday and inspect the places where the massacre took place.

He said the government took a decision in principle to change the name of Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) soon after completing some legal procedures.

Sina said the Operation Rebel Hunt led by army started in a limited way to catch fugitive BDR members.

Thousands of BDR members staged mutiny against their army officer on Wednesday morning. The mutiny came to an end on Thursday evening after a series of negotiations between the mutineers and government officials.

BDR, whose main task is to protect the country's borders, is under Home Minister, but its senior officers are all from the Army.
