LOS ANGELES, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- "Fury" starring Brad Pitt usurped first place this weekend from the two-week box-office winner "Gone Girl."
The World War II epic about a Yankee tank crew fighting far behind Nazi lines, opened at 3,173 locations in United States and Canada with 23.5 million dollars in receipts, according to box-office tracker Rentrak.
It got strong reviews and had an 80-percent positive rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes. It also received an "A-" grade from audience polling firm CinemaScore.
The war theme film attracted more male audience, which was up to 60 percent, and about 51 percent aged above 35.
Fox's "Gone Girl" stayed strong in the third week. It slipped to second place with 17.8 million dollars in sales.
Playing at 3,070 theaters, Fox's new animated film "The Book Of Life" opened in third, with 17 million dollars. It received an "A-" grade from CinemaScore and a 79-percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The other seven of the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend were "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" (12 million dollars), "The Best of Me" (10.2 million), "Dracula Untold" (9.9 million), "The Judge" (7.9 million), "Annabelle" (7.9 million), "The Equalizer" (5.5 million) and "The Maze Runner" (4.5 million).
