SINGAPORE, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Red Umbrella, a film directed by Indonesian directors won the Asian Short Film Awards, the highlight of Singapore's debut film event ScreenSingapore, local media reported on Monday.

The thriller tells of the experience of a taxi driver ferrying beautiful and mysterious young passenger that prompts the taxi driver to realize the importance of family.

Edward Gunawan, 28, who co-directed the short film with 33-year- old Andri Cung, said it was a surprise given that they handed in the application at almost the last minute.

Organizers said last month they received 90 entries from 15 countries and regions in Asia-Pacific in less than two months for the short film awards, which came with a prize of 20,000 Singapore dollars (15,810 U.S. dollars). The entries were submitted by filmmakers in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Australia, India, Iran, Bangladesh, Cambodia, New Zealand, Indonesia, as well as China including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

The jury of the Asian Short Film Awards will be headed by legendary filmmaker and three-time Oscar winner Oliver Stone.

The media week ScreenSingapore kicked off on Sunday evening, with Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi walking the red carpet. The Media Development Authority has said it "is not a film festival" but a film event that will include awards, technologies, content market, conferences and workshops.
