Apart from fears over losses to the fur industry, there are concerns that small economies like Denmark could lose production and manufacturing in the fashion industry to emerging market producers who have access to skilled, low-cost labor.

Speaking to Xinhua, Mikkelsen said the Copenhagen Fashion Week is a major benefit to Denmark's economy.

"It's had lots of impact, it's one of our main areas if you look at export and development," he said. "Ninety percent of the production goes to foreign countries, and if you look at the combination of talents and tradesmanship, this is what we will live off in Denmark in future."

"We can never survive by competing on low wages and so on," Mikkelsen continued. "We will survive by competing on goods ideas and good talents."
