NEW YORK, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- The New York Film Critics Circle on Monday picked "The Social Network" as the best film of 2010 and David Fincher as the best director for his work on the Facebook- based movie.

"The Kids Are All Right," about a complicated lesbian family, won the most awards for Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg's screenplay, Annette Bening's lead performance and Mark Ruffalo's supporting job.

Colin Firth was named best actor for his portrayal of a stuttering King George VI in "The King's Speech." Melissa Leo earned best supporting actress award for "The Fighter" and Matthew Libatique won for his cinematography on Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan."

Actors (L-R) Jesse Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake, Max Minghella and Andrew Garfield pose backstage after accepting the Hollywood Ensemble Cast Award for the movie "The Social Network" at the 14th Annual Hollywood Awards Gala in Beverly Hills, California October 25, 2010.

"Inside Job," an investigation of the Wall Street crash, won best non-fiction film, and "Carlos," an epic French/German bio of the international terrorist, took the best foreign-language film slot.

Founded in 1935, the New York Film Critics Circle includes 29 critics from websites, magazines and newspapers. Each December the group meets in New York to vote on awards for the previous calendar year's films.

The Circle's awards are often viewed as harbingers of the Oscar nominations, which are announced each February.
