Comedy Central was also a big winner. "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" won its eighth consecutive Emmy as outstanding variety, music or comedy series, beating out NBC's short-lived "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien."

The Emmy Awards focus more on entertainment, deemed the television equivalent to the Academy Awards (for film) and Grammy Awards (for music.) The Primetime Emmys are presented in recognition of excellence of American primetime television programming.

The Emmy ceremony was shown live coast-to-coast for the first time in 1976 and are currently broadcast in rotation among the ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox networks.
