BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhuanet) -- Lee DeWyze won the title of "American Idol", beating front-runner Crystal Bowersox, media reported Wednesday.

When Idol host Ryan Seacrest revealed the result, Lee looked stunned and got emotional, looking like he was about to burst into tears. He gave Crystal a hug and told her that he loves her.

Then Lee grabbed a microphone to sing his victory song, "Beautiful Day," a song about losing everything but still finding joy in what you have, a convincing sentiment coming from the suburban everyman.

Lee's faith in himself never wavered. Before the finale, he told reporters, "I think throughout the season the word "confidence" has come up with me a lot and I think looking confident and being confident are two different things."

Now in its 9th season, "American Idol" is still America's most popular TV show, but has seen audiences slip by about 9% this year to an average 23.9 million viewers per episode.
