LOS ANGELES, April 2 (Xinhua) -- John Forsythe, the actor who made his fortune as TV's affable "Bachelor Father" and the scheming oil tycoon in "Dynasty," died on Thursday at the age of 92 in Santa Ynez, California.

The handsome, smooth-voiced actor passed away as a result of complications of pneumonia after a yearlong battle with colon cancer. In 1979, he had underwent quadruple bypass surgeries.

Born on Jan. 29, 1918, Forsythe had been active in film and television business for some 60 years. He had appeared in three television series throughout his life.

In the 1950s, he received an Emmy nomination for best actor. He also earned two Golden Globes for his role as the ruthless oil tycoon in ABC's glamor soup "Dynasty", apart from four additional nominations and three Emmy nominations for the same role in the 1980s.

He also played an important role in promoting charities. He was the founder and promotor of the World Wildlife Fund and other public institutions.

He is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, six grandchildren and four great-grand children.
