Hello. I'm Melissa Long at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

The Supreme Court has agreed to consider the constitutionality of lethal injections. The High Court will hear a challenge from two inmates on death row who sued the state of Kentucky in 2004. They claimed lethal injection amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. One of them had been scheduled for execution, but the Kentucky Supreme Court halted the proceedings.

North Korea, Iran, Syria, Cuba and Myanmar, harsh words for all from President Bush, an action against one. In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly this morning, President Bush accused those nations and others of brutalizing their people. Plus, he announced new financial sanctions on the military leaders in Myanmar. The move comes amid more than a week of massive pro-democracy demonstrations there led by Buddhist monks.

No verdict yet in the trial of polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs. But one of the original jurors has now been replaced by an alternate. It's not clear what effect that may have on the trial. Jeffs is accused of "rape by accomplice" for allegedly coercing a 14-year-old girl to marry her older cousin.

Suspended NFL quarterback Michael Vick has been indicted on state dogfighting charges. Each animal cruelty charge in Virginia could mean up to 5 years in prison. The top prosecutor in the Virginia County where Vick owns property presented his case to a grand jury today. The prosecutor says Vick and other defendants have admitted in federal court to helping kill 6 to 8 pitbulls.

Japan has a new Prime Minister, Yasuo Fukuda. Among other things, he has promised to keep up the US as a close ally. The Parliament was split over his election but he got the support of the Lower House which is all he needed under Japan's Constitution. Fukuda takes over from Shinzo Abe who lasted less than one year in office.
