Good afternoon, from the cnn center in Atlanta, I'm Melissa Long with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

It's been called the single deadliest attack on US ground troops in Iraq in more than a year. Nine were Americans killed, 20 were wounded when a suicide car bomber struck their patrol base northeast of Baghdad in the Diyala Province. The area has been the site of intense fighting. An insurgent group that includes Al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for yesterday's attack. The victims were all from the army's 82nd Airborne that's based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

President Bush says he won't budge. He again vowed to veto a war-funding bill that sets the timetable for withdrawal of US troops from Iraq. Mr. Bush said the measure is nothing more than a political statement by Democratic leadership. Democrats have said they won't back down either. But it's unlikely they will get the 2/3 majority to override a presidential veto.

Pakistan Supreme Court drew protesters again today as a legal battle resumed between the president and Supreme Court Chief Justice. Thousands of lawyers and political activists demonstrated in Islamabad and other cities. President Pervez Musharraf suspended the judge in March. The Chief Justice is contesting the decision. Opponents say the suspension was politically motivated.

Former presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton will lead the US delegation to the funeral of Boris Yeltsin. The former Russian president will be buried tomorrow in Moscow. The Kremlin says it will be a national day of mourning in Russia. Yeltsin passed away yesterday at the age of 76 reportedly from heart failure. He was Russia's first democratically elected president.

British police say they've arrested six terror suspects in a series of raids in and around London. The men are accused of inciting others to commit acts of terrorism overseas and raising funds for terror attacks. Abu Izzadeen, an outspoken Islamic activist was reportedly among those arrested. Authorities would not confirm that. He heckled British Home Secretary John Reid on live television last year. Izzadeen already faces charges of encouraging terrorism after he was arrested in February and then released on bound.

From deadly spinach to tainted peanut butter, the toxic pet food as well, recent cases of contamination are the focus of a house hearing today in Washington. A House subcommittee is trying to determine whether the Food and Drug Administration can keep America's foods supply safe. Officials from food manufacturers and distributors involved in the recent recalls of tainted products are among those testifying.

And you are now up-to-date. Be sure to stick with cnn.com, 24/7 for news from all around the world and of course we'll have updates right here throughout the day.
