People in Scotland have begun voting on whether or not to leave the United Kingdom.

Scotland's First Minister, Alex Salmond, the leader of the 'Yes campaign' has made a passionate appeal on the eve of the historic referendum.

"Independence is not a magic word. Are there things that go wrong for any nation? Yes of course there are. Are there challenges to overcome? Undoubtedly. But my question is this, who better to meet these challenges for this nation than the people who live and work in this nation."

British Prime Minister David Cameron has been helping lead the "no" forces.

During his final appeal, Cameron admits he's "nervous, but confident" the people of Scotland will not dissolve its over 300-year old union with the UK.

"A successful economy with a growing number or jobs that we've seen today - the Scottish unemployment rate at six percent is actually lower than the unemployment rate in London and shows what a success the Scottish economy is. So, the success of that, but combined with the ability of Scots if they vote "No" to have even more powers and even more say over how to run their own affairs in Scotland."

4.2-million people have registered to vote, representing 97-percent of the Scottish electorate.

Polling heading into the referendum has put the question too close to call.

For more on the referendum, we spoke earlier with Professor Keith Cuthbertson with CASS business school at City University in London.
