"Madou," or the models that appear on retailers' websites, have become a popular part-time job in China.
The word "madou" sounds like the English word "model."
Shen Hui is a businessman who owns an online shop. He says as competition with online shopping has become much fiercer, many online apparel sellers have been hiring "madou" to try to help boost their sales.
"Before we employed "madou," we could only sell up to 20 articles of clothing a month. But after we showed pictures of "madou" wearing our apparel, our sales volume quickly grew, and we now sell about 60 pieces a month."
Most of the "madou" are students or the friends of the online shop owners who take on the work to earn extra money.
