Rescue recovery and clean-up in southwestern China after a moderate earthquake strikes, killing one person and injuring more than 320. It happened Thursday night, the 6.2 magnitude earthquake centered in Yao’an County in Yunnan province. Chinese state media said approximately 18,000 homes collapsed and nearly 40,000 homes were damaged. The quake was followed by eight aftershocks.
The Chinese government sent 4,500 tents, 3,000 quilts and other relief supplies to the quake zone in Yunnan province. Hundreds of police have been dispatched to the quake zone as well. The quake province is in a mountainous region that lies on China’s southern border with Thailand and Myanmar. It also borders Sichuan province where a 7.9 magnitude quake last year left almost 90,000 people dead or missing.
